DESCRIPTION

Knowledge Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program in Psychology, students will be able to:

  • Understand how the brain, behavior, and environment interact; how people develop cognitive, emotional, and behavioral problems, as well as how to intervene; how people interact with the world around them, and how these processes are integrated into personality under interpersonal, social, and cultural influences.
  • Describe the basic characteristics of the scientific method as it applies to psychology and follow the APA Code of Ethics in the treatment of human and nonhuman participants in the design, data collection, interpretation, and reporting of psychological research.
  • Seek and evaluate scientific evidence for psychological claims.
  • Understand the core values in psychology.
  • Learn how to implement psychological knowledge, skills and values in occupational pursuits in a variety of settings.

  • Effective writing and oral communication skills.
  • Advanced skills in critical thinking and analysis.
  • Effective interpersonal skills such as empathy, emotional intelligence, teamwork and conflict resolution.

Curriculum
This bachelor degree program is designed to require 4 academic years of full-time study. Students can opt to study in part-time mode.

FURTHER STUDIES
At New York College: Graduates of our BS Concentration in Psychology program are accepted by most MA or/and MSc programs offered at New York College. Students may choose to combine work with further study by studying for our one year MSc in Psychology (concentration of Positive Psychology) or the three year MSc in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapies - both offered by University of Bolton, UK. An MBA program is also on offer for those students who choose to combine business along with the study of science.

At Institutions Abroad: The entry qualifications for graduate studies differ from university to university; however the SUNY/Empire State College degree is accepted by most universities in the U.S. and almost all in the U.K. competitive universities, in addition to the degree itself, usually require a GPA of 3.0 or higher. If you are interested in pursuing opportunities for study abroad, you are encouraged to contact your advisor early on your studies, while, additionally our Student Affairs Department can assist you in coming in contact with our alumni who have continued their studies abroad and who would be pleased to share their experiences with you.
